Salon presents: “Polite People in a Polite Society”, a conceptual photo project contemplating the interaction between “polite people,” or so-called “green men,” with a “polite society,” thus transferring traces of one’s activities into the space of others. The project questions the idea of empires’ capacity for self-analysis and the reevaluation of their own historical mistakes, addressing the effectiveness of such self-reflection.

Taking inspiration from abstract expressionism, prehistoric art, the natural world, Classical cameo carvings and August Rodin’s sculptures, Austin creates figurative and abstract sculpture using materials ranging from clay and plaster to latex and bio-plastics. His work celebrates the unique beauty of his materials, conveying the sense of wonder with which he meets the world.

This is an installation about ownership, belonging, and the complexity of community. It creates literal grey areas.
The exhibition is slowly reduced, counting down from 1000 pieces at the beginning – deconstructed and changing shape as people take ownership of the individual pieces of the whole. At the same time, by taking a piece one owner becomes connected to every other. They are part of something bigger, if more diffuse.

Lily Hughes presents The Cleaner – a portrait of one artist’s labour in Margate’s Airbnb industry. The experience of cleaning holiday lets is seen through the lens of her art practice, which would not have been possible without a second job. Drawings, linocuts, sculpture and a short film are collected here to produce a body of research that explores different types of work, and the politics of time, money and art.

Lisa Hawkins is an oil painter, who is interested in Spirit of Place, memory, imagination and colour. The works are completed from drawings and studies in the landscape and worked up in the studio to evoke the “feeling” of the original encounter. David works primarily in oils, charcoal and pencils. His traditional, figurative style consciously contrasts with the topics of his paintings. Sometimes narrative, often tender, his oils celebrate queer moments which he feels have been underrepresented in the history of art. There is a sense of intimacy which is the fruit of his observation of and conversations with his models.

To celebrate the official launch of Salon (formerly EEL), a creative hub in the heart of Margate, we are kicking things off with a multi-disciplinary group show. ‘Transitions’ features 15 artists and explores periods of change, flux and re-incarnation.

Starting at 5pm, Kit Bula will drum unceasingly for 24 hours, not stopping even for the necessities of human life (e.g. the evacuation of the bowels, or preparation of food). This physically, psychologically and rhythmically dangerous feat of percussive ingenuity threatens to overturn contemporary conceptions of drumming.

An exhibition of new works by Adam Bartlett. Adam works with a combination of acrylic, enamel, spray paint and emulsion on paper and board. He builds up layers of form and colour, contrasting graphic geometric design qualities against intricate illustration and abstract textures. Resulting in brightly coloured, tropical, joyful scenes.
