James Tuitt – ‘THE FOGGIEST’
29/08/25 till 03/09/25
While ‘feeling’ instead of ‘filming’ is valid and necessary guidance to enjoying the clubbing experience, for Tuitt, this sentiment is almost a surrender to an idea that these nights and experiences don’t need to exist beyond the moment. The Foggiest considers the reality that not only might we want to hold on to some of these memories, but also that our memory may not always serve us so well, especially when it comes to the personal, oral histories of eras, spaces or people. The Foggiest presents images that may be accurate descriptions or dreamlike misremeberings of nightclubs; The entrances, the interiors, the scale, colours and spirit of the places.
As the quantities of clubs have plummeted in recent years queer spaces and communities especially are at risk. And while personal photography is, at times rightly so, not permitted, how much of our own experiences might get lost or distorted with the passing of time and the closure of more venues?
James Tuitt is a multidisciplinary artist working predominantly with painting, sculpture and print. Throughout these media the artist creates works that are part metaphysical spaces and landscapes inspired by 90’s rave flyers, part portraits centering black models from the pages Tuitt’s own archive of fashion magazines; for which the artist has been a collector for over a decade. A professional background in scenic set
painting, prop making and dressing, enables the artist to create unique exhibitions characterised by the use of sculpture and narrative installation which expand their paintings’ spaces into dynamic experiences.
