Giles Evers & Jason Wisteria Evers – ‘The Flux, SilverHush, and how The Sojourners Found the Island’
20/03/25 till 26/03/25 2025
Giles Evers (March 19th 1962 – December 19th 1997) Studied at Byam Shaw, Heatherley & Corsham Art College near Bath. He finished his Fine Art studies in 1983. At this point just before graduating he developed the early stages of “schizophrenia”. This made creating art much harder as he spent time in Hospital in Denmark Hill, South London. He then moved to Shrewsbury to be nearer his mother whilst receiving help for his mental illness. In 1994 he married Carol Doddington. During this time he wrote more poetry than painted and was a published poet. In 1995 his daughter Paloma was born. In 1997 he went missing & was found dead in South Wales. This show is dedicated to his memory.
Jason Evers is a self taught artist with an interest and talent for drawing. His art career began anew while exploring super 8 at The Klinker Club, playing percussion live with the Bicycle Clip Sex collective at the Camberwell Arts Festival in 2007 and showing super 8 film with live music at the Sun & Doves in Camberwell.
After studying for a Politics degree 2009-2012 he worked on an installation for Burning Nest Festival in 2015 entitled “Peace & Conflict Alters Our Vision”. This was inspired by a shaman from Peru he encountered at a Peruvian festival: Futurismo Ancestral at Somerset House. It was based on a Shamanic journey using fluorescent puppets. Other influences were from the various altars on display at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill. This was followed by an art show with the same piece at 41a Hillcourt Road, East Dulwich plus a room space dedicated to an installation entitled “Gilgamesh & Enkidu” involving a light show co-created with Howard Batchen.
The next piece on show at Salon is a development of those two Light Show pieces. The current display cabinet is inspired by Salvador Dali’s 3 places (Port Lligat, Figueres, Pubol Castle) in the Costa Brava, the Pinocchio story, Sumerian cuneiform, ancient mythologies, the films of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch & the Coen Brothers. Jason moved to Margate from East Dulwich in September 2017. He was married to Outsider artist and therapist Deborah Anne Lee who was one of “The Glasgow Girls” between 1999 & 2004. Jason attended the Sound & Art course at The Margate School 2023-2024. During his time as an artist in Margate Jason has shown his & his late brother Giles’ art work at 3 pop up art spaces with Stretch Gallery (run by Carlotta Allum & Dean Stalham) and one show at his home “Sweet Haven” near Poets Corner in Margate.
