Dana Fox – ‘Haunted Futures’

05/09/25 till 10/09/25

Dana Fox is a Margate-based digital 3D artist and animator. His influences range from the photography of Gregory Crewdson and the more terrifying aspects of 1970s British sci-fi, to haunted moorlands, UFO sightings and deconstructionism.

Between commissioned projects, ranging from concept art and animated music videos, Fox is currently immersed in dyzlocation, an alternate-reality set in the subterranean, semi-fictitious chasms deep underneath Margate. He uses 3D scanned models of the local area to create surreal and eerily familiar settings, which he then mixes with further original elements and animations.

Combining his interests in history, archaeology, ancient civilisations and speculative fiction, he uses animation to create an immersive narrative which suggests ontological deconstruction and psychological breakdown.

A long time ago, human beings had the power and the knowledge to travel in time and space at will. We partially lost that knowledge, but artefacts used by our ancestors still exist, as well as certain methods for interdimensional travel. dyzlocation is an organisation which is working to uncover these methods, to investigate these phenomena and the unexplained side-effects which can result – such as an obsession with nostalgia, recurring deja vu and visits from otherworldly beings. Introducing Haunted Futures, the first part of the dyzlocation narrative. Your future is haunted.

I aim to address the fragility of reality, time and place, and how disorienting it can be when established facts, values and certainties begin to break apart. This can be typified by the breakdown of physical locations when they are re-developed or ‘regenerated’. Once familiar public areas become partitioned and privatised, the local population becomes excluded and nomadic. We can also see this in psychological and physical identity; bodies change, mental states evolve and/or break down. National and international politics, religious beliefs and spiritual affiliations are further examples of states of being, which when in flux, can result in isolation, conflict and even epiphany. During all of these transitional states, human beings often experience a shift in their understanding of their place in the universe, whether scientific, historical or personal. – Dana Fox
