Salon presents ANIMA, an exhibition by Margate artist Jennifer Hooper.
Opening on 7th November and running for two weeks until 20th November.

“ANIMA meaning soul or life in Latin relates to Animism – a metaphysical belief system, focused on the concept of the immaterial soul. All creatures are deemed to possess a distinct spiritual essence and sentience does not just exist in humans.

According to the psychologist Carl Jung, the animal is sublime and represents the divine side of the human psyche. He believed that animals live in close contact with a secret order in nature, and in close contact with the absolute knowledge of the unconscious.

The animals in Hooper’s paintings have an emotional and psychological presence; we are confronted with their lack of agency but also with ourselves, and a sense of loss.
There is a unity and equality between the humans and the animals; the nude figures are suggestive of our animalistic precepts and the animal gaze is knowing and sentient.

The paintings can be described as poetic realism where figuration has an elusive, dreamlike quality. Through multiple, delicate applications of paint and marks the tenuity between beauty and melancholy is described. Something intangible.”

Equilibrium

The warmth of a Spanish summer has arrived at Salon, where the quiet streets and unhurried tempo of Valencian life can be enjoyed though Olena Zublevych’s painted works.

Art imbued with the energy of the south can immerse you in a completely different dimension. Beyond familiar Mediterranean motifs there are far deeper layers of meaning for reflection.

Olena is a Ukrainian artist who has lived and worked in Valencia for almost 2 years, having previously received a Master of Fine Arts in Odesa, taught painting, and worked in graphic design.

“It doesn’t matter what you do as an artist, what matters is how you feel while creating.”

“All paintings are filled with a certain state and carry their own charge and frequency. Vibration of color, color relationships, composition - all these are tools that work for expressiveness and what captivates me in the process.”

“Spain is an ideal place for me, nourishing and filling me with new meanings, ideas and images.”

“I like Valencia and its graphic, roughness and color in places. My latest projects are directly related to this city and getting to know myself in it.”

“It all started with sketches of Valencia. I came here from Berlin with only a notepad and pen. Minimum means - maximum expressiveness. Working directly with the area without room for error - this is how I began my communication with the city. And I continue all this time. I created a map where I mark the places. And you can follow them.”
